On this day, I leave it to the late James Baldwin to say it best:
"I love America more than any other country in this world, and, exactly for this reason, I insist on the right to criticize her perpetually."

With that right, so I shall, for I love her so.

That now said, here's what should be our national anthem, by a man who sang it as if he'd written it.

we have been the most forgiving--the version that ray charles croons is one of beauty and of pain.

It really is as if he's struggling with it - both with the staggering beauty of what he's describing, and the pain associated with the history he can't help but carry. Great observation - and blog - sister shine.
