According to a 1998 interview, Osama bin Laden "claimed that the United States has carried out ‘the biggest theft in history’ by buying oil from Persian Gulf countries at low prices. According to bin Laden, a barrel of oil today should cost $144. Based on that calculation, he said, the Americans have stolen $36 trillion from Muslims."

Guess what a barrel of oil costs today.

Disregard for a moment that American oil companies are making profits so large that "insane" doesn't aptly describe them, that we have oil men running our executive branch and that, of course, there's no connection there.

This is an unequivocal victory for bin Laden. How can it be viewed as anything but?

So, bin Laden gets his wish ten years later, and the oil companies win. Mission accomplished, George.

  • THE GIFT THAT KEEPS ON GIVING..
  • ThinkProgress dissects this issue here:
Bin Laden didn’t have to become king of Saudi Arabia to achieve his goal; in fact, Bush’s policies delivered it for him. The Bush administration’s catastrophic decision to invade Iraq, sink the nation into debt to pay for that war, and consequently, weaken the dollar have all caused oil prices to soar astronomically.

They didn't even mention their suppression of scientific efforts to pursue alternative fuels and overall laziness in dealing with the global warming issue, something that might've spurred an administration with some sense to lessen their dependence on foreign oil. One would hope this might enter into the thoughts of folks who are paying $4.40 a gallon right now, but want to vote against Barack Obama because he went to a particular church.
