And yes, it's a smear.
To allege that someone is hiding their true belief system when a) you have no proof of it, b) you don't know the person in question and, most importantly, c) said belief system (Islam) is the subject of a xenophobic hatred unseen in America since the days of Jim Crow and could harm their reputation, however unfairly...is to slander them.
Purest definition of the word.
