A note I wrote to Andrew Sullivan this evening:
Brother Sullivan:

No doubt many of seen this RNC foolishness on their site.

Obviously, Barack Obama shouldn't take the bait and catch the first plane to Baghdad. But you know where he should go, and make his new cause celebre?

New Orleans.

Show Americans that you need not go halfway around the world to view the manifestation of Bush-era promises unfulfilled. You only need to head to NOLA, the lost city in the Gulf. What better way to return the argument to John McCain's weakest point, highlight that joke of a visit he had a few months ago, and encourage America to examine these men behind the bravado?

I'd love to hear your opinion about a) whether or not you think this McCain gambit is just a canard, and b) whether or not you feel Obama visiting Iraq as is would be advantageous to his understanding of what's really going on over there. Frankly, I don't see how a stroll through the marketplace surrounded by armed guards would really promote that "understanding".

But there's one thing McCain isn't counting on.

Along with Ron Paul, Obama has led all candidates in military donations! What if he goes over there and is treated like a conquering hero by the soldiers? McCain has claimed the exclusive right to represent them - didn't they know?
